I’m not exaggerating when I say that EarthBound is one of my favorite games. It’s the one that taught me games could go beyond being entertaining, they could be important, and have something to say. 

The game presents itself as a cute, Peanuts-inspired homage to Americana and disarms you from thinking it could be anything else. And then it shows its true nature and knocks you on your ass.

I know that this game (and its sequel) are in danger of being overhyped. But I implore you, if you grew up in the 90s and missed this game, or if you’re younger and have only heard its reputation, please, please play this game. Do yourself a favor, you will not regret it.

Earthbound will be on Wii U’s Virtual Console in the West this year
